Cascading Map Servers - Brad Spencer, CubeWerx Australia

"The notion of chaining web services is not new but the application within a spatial context somewhat is. When chaining is applied at the OGC Web Map Server (WMS) level the concept of cascading WMSes presents additional options to the application and/or portal developer."

CubeSERV® Cascading Web Map Server Demo

A cascading Web Map Server can use other web map servers as data sources, seamlessly translating and overlaying the results into a unique map image for the user. To our knowledge CubeSERV® is the only Web Map Server capable of this feat.

What this means is that your developers will be presented with a single, uniform interface to the WMS, no matter what downstream servers are being cascaded, greatly simplfying their job. In addition, CubeSERV® will automatically supplement the capabilities of any downstream server, providing missing spatial reference systems, image formats, etc.

In this demonstration, we will be cascading the servers below.  Two options are available for map viewing clients, Google Earth, and our Web-based client, CubeXPLOR.  Click one of the links on the left to get started.

  • USGS Framework Data Web Map Service
The Framework Web Feature Services are offered by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in support of the development of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI).

  • NASA JPL Global Data Server
A collection of global data layers collected by various NASA satellites and projects.

  • Microsoft™ Terraserver
A global image mosaic server provided by Microsoft™ Corporation

  • Integrated CEOS European Data Center
A demonstration service provided by University College London and ESYS plc, funded by the British National Space Centre, serving global and continental-scale, full-resolution geographic information, particularly for Europe and Africa.

  • The GLOBE Program Visualization Server
GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) is a worldwide hands-on, primary and secondary school-based science and education program. This server contains a set of basemaps supporting the program.

  • The Canadian Center for Topographic Information
Complete access to the Canadian National Topographic Database (NTDB) layers, comprising the data used to compose 1:50K and 1:250K topographic maps.

  • Geobase Canadian WMS Datawarehouse
GeoBase is a federal, provincial and territorial government initiative that is overseen by the Canadian Council on Geomatics (CCOG). It is undertaken to ensure the provision of, and access to, a common, up-to-date and maintained base of quality geospatial data for all of Canada.
